University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

Ranked as one of the best in the African region and highly reputable in the world, Wits is known for innovative, high-quality and relevant teaching, cutting-edge research as well as policy, service delivery and knowledge leadership in public health.

Master’s and doctoral degrees obtained through SAPPHGenE will be conferred by the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), whose campus in Johannesburg is located 15 kilometers from NICD.

Wits is internationally recognized for its excellence in research, high academic standards, and commitment to social justice. All of the NICD researchers who serve as SAPPHGenE mentors have joint/academic appointments at Wits and are already serving as research advisors to Wits students.

All of our degree students will receive their degrees from the School of Pathology or School of Public Health. The School of Pathology serves three vital functions: service, research and teaching. One of the major goals of the School is to provide training of medical scientists. The School of Public Health produces skilled public health practitioners appropriately trained to address the range of public health needs and challenges within South African and African settings.
